Innovating ECE: How Districts Can Create Transformative Pre-K-to-K Facilities

Study after study confirms it: the early learning environment has a profound impact on a child’s future success. With the pre-K-to-K years so transformative, districts are looking to create equally transformative facilities for California’s youngest learners. This workshop will guide ECE facilities design from planning to delivery, exploring a variety of building solutions that meet different programming needs while fully complying with Universal Pre-K and TK/K requirements. A moderated panel will lead a dynamic discussion, offering insight from a district facilities manager, construction manager, architect and modular manufacturer, who’ll give attendees the critical tools to fund, design and build innovative ECE facilities. An interactive case study will show how one district pioneered a visionary concept, successfully navigating challenges and leveraging state funding to deliver a first-of-its-kind ECE campus.

Learning Objectives

1. Plan for Project Success: Learn how early planning can set a project up for success by helping districts assess needs, set goals, evaluate options and create design strategies that maximize the effectiveness of budget, site and programming while meeting the developmental needs of Pre-K, TK and Kindergarten students.

2. Stack the Building Blocks to Optimize Outcomes: Explain how to structure contracts to control variables and maximize funding, form collaborative partnerships that ensure a smooth process and use delivery methods like design-build that improve communication and efficiency to fast-track project completion.

3. Understand the Modular Construction Process and Its Benefits for ECE Innovation: Explore the ways DSA-PC and Pre-Engineered (PE) designs can accelerate ECE expansion at a lower cost, delivering high-quality, code-compliant buildings that can be scaled or consolidated to create custom age-appropriate building solutions.

4. Develop a Blueprint for Successful ECE Delivery Using the Lemon Grove ECE Case Study: Learn how to optimize opportunities and navigate challenges, fostering collaboration between design teams, CMs and modular manufacturers to pioneer transformative ECE concepts, leveraging modular technology to customize projects to a district’s unique vision.
